Delphic: Rehabilitation at VRSVA After Unsuccessful Rehabilitation At Home
Delphic sustained an injury to the origin of his left front deep digital flexor tendon, which was confirmed on MRI. He was given a stall rest and hand-walking program to carry out at home. Delphic was anxious and unhappy during his stall rest period and he injured his right hind suspensory ligament while in his stall. He was sent to VRSVA to try rehabilitation at a facility.
During this time, we emphasized mental stimulation for Delphic. We housed him in a stall at the center of the barn, where much of the barn action takes place. We gave him neighbors who were calm and content. We kept him busy with stall games and rehabilitation exercises throughout the day.
Delphic’s rehabilitation plan included vibration plate therapy, balance pads, core exercises, Class IV laser therapy, frequent hand walks and time spent hand grazing. When he was ready, he began exercise in the Aquapacer and then eventually started back under saddle. During his back-to-work period, he began to develop effusion in his left front fetlock. We were able to catch and treat this quickly with cryotherapy, laser therapy, and joint injection so that there was minimal set back during his rehab program.
Delphic recovered well from his injuries. He enjoyed the company of a barn full of rehabilitation horses and the stimulation of a busy rehabilitation program. We are so happy to see him strong, sound and back to work with his owner!
