Lilly: Rehabilitation for a Femoral Deformity and High-Grade Patellar Luxation
Lilly is a mixed-breed dog who was born with a deformity of her left femur. She also suffered from significant patellar luxation in that limb. When she presented to VRSVA at 10 months of age, she was mostly non-weight bearing on the left rear limb. It was clear that Lilly would need surgery, to correct the deformity and address the patellar luxation, so a PRE-hab therapy program was designed to prepare her for the operation. Much of this therapy focused on range of motion work to prevent contracture in the limb. Gentle exercises were also incorporated to maintain some strength and prevent further atrophy from disuse.
Lilly then underwent surgery on the limb with Dr. Mercurio at Virginia Veterinary Center. A left distal femoral corrective osteotomy with plate and screw fixation, medial tibial tuberosity transposition, and patellar groove replacement were performed. After her operation, she was mostly non-weight bearing, but would occasionally touch her toe down when walking. Rehabilitation initially focused on comfort and improving her range of motion. Slowly she began work to build basic strength in the limb. She progressed to building functional strength and coordination to help her learn to use the limb to walk, climb stairs, and for other daily activities.
Lilly is now able to walk with minimal lameness and can enjoy her playful puppy years with her family. She was lucky to have a collaborative team behind her:
An amazing family devoted to her care and to giving her the best chance at a normal life
An excellent surgeon willing and able to operate on her at a young age
A great rehab team dedicated to her prehab before surgery and her rehabilitation program after surgery
We are so happy for Lilly and her family!
